The practice of Henning Hartwig comprises prosecution and litiga-tion of IP rights in the fields of trademark, design, copyright and unfair competition law.
A main focus of his professional activity is national and internatio-nal industrial design law, in particular multinational design infringe-ment proceedings as well as invalidity proceedings before the OHIM in Alicante. As editor of the annual casebook entitled “Design Protection in Europe”, the only one of its kind, Henning Hartwig has unique access to Europe-wide unpublished decisions on Community and national design infringement (see publications). Clients in this field include manufacturers of mobile multifunctional communica-tion devices and automotive companies. Henning Hartwig also recently successfully conducted and coordinated a number of multi-jurisdictional infringement proceedings in Germany, Italy, Switzer-land, France, Austria and the Netherlands related to the alleged infringement of a Community design for a shoe.
Further professional activities concern the German Unfair Competition Act, in particular disputes involving misleading advertising. In the worldwide fight against product piracy, Henning Hartwig represents a major European manufacturer from the cosmetics industry. Another focus of his practice is trademark work, where his clients include an important international company from the consumer healthcare sector and a well known Swiss food company.
He is also active in copyright protection in an industrial context, having represented one of the leading European furniture manu-facturers. In addition, he handled one of the first infringement cases in Germany regarding enforcement of the unregistered Community design.
Henning Hartwig has published more than 70 articles on trademark, design, copyright and unfair competition law (see publications) and is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars of professional organizations such as GRUR, INTA, AIPPI, LES and FORUM. He also lectures on international and European design law at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH).
He is a member of the design team of MARQUES (Association of European Trade Mark Owners), UNION (European Practitioners in Intellectual Property), member of the design rights committee of IPO (Intellectual Property Owners) and member of the expert committee for design law of GRUR. Henning Hartwig is individually recommended in JUVE German Commercial Law Firms 2008/2009 (“highly qualified trademark lawyer”) and JUVE German Commercial Law Firms 2009/2010 (“very good in design law”).
